I lOVE USA by Hedi Slimane
I LOVE USA is the latest short film from iconic menswear designer and photographer Hedi Slimane. The film features Sidney, a perfect vision of the All-American California girl and her companion: a cello playing boy-wolf. Their courtship is an innocent one full of making music and enjoying tranquil moments on the beach in Venice, California. Slimane’s aesthetic is an almost graphic contrast of saturated black and white and the film’s strength lies in the juxtaposition of visuals and ideas: the split screen of Sidney versus a tattered American flag flapping in the wind (an image used frequently in Slimane’s work), the grotesque wolf mask versus the sweetness of the sound of swishing pom poms or writing letters in the sand, and it’s all accompanied by a somber cello score. Sometimes it doesn’t take much to evoke a feeling.
