THE BOY IN ME
Women wearing men's trousers isn't a new thing: Katherine Hepburn wore high-waisted pleated trousers in the thirties, Audrey Hepburn black cigarette pants, and Marlene Dietrich made trousers look glamorous and sexily androgynous. Slacks became a real style statement as opposed to simply utilitarian.
Men's trousers and in particular denim jeans are making their mark again in the world of womenswear. The skinny jean (once a style revolution and today seen on everybody's legs) is being replaced by the "boyfriend", which as the name clearly suggests, is simply girls wearing their boyfriend's jeans. I own a slouchy pair of Nudie stolen from my boy's wardrobe a while ago. I find that when I wear them I acquire a sexy cool nonchalence, a resolutely chic and feminine attitude which I love and it makes me adventurous. The comfort factor is a glorious plus in favour of the boyfriend trousers in the "skinny versus baggy" debate! I team them with gladiator sandals, wedges, heels or ballet flats. They look good with everything. Designers like the adored Alexander Wang perfectly understand this modern approach to wearing men's trousers and have embraced it in their collections. If you don't fancy the rolled up boyfriend denim you can try high-waisted slouchy men's trousers from Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, Acne, Philip Lim, Yves Saint Laurent or Top Shop. There is something so sophisticated and seductive about a girl in men's trousers but of course it's all about how you wear them...
