Tip of the Week: Girl Guide to Vintage Buying!!
*Buying vintage is a great way to personalize your look and revamp your wardrobe with some old-school style, but it can be tricky. Whether you're buying recycled to save the environment or to save some cash, there are a number of things to keep in mind that will help you avoid the pitfalls of buying vintage. This guide will tell you what you need to know and where to go to score the best vintage finds, whether you're a vintage collector, or just looking to add some vintage personality to your basics.

1. Always buy your size!

Alterations will always be more trouble than they're worth. Ever found a piece you love that only fits when you hold the waist in? Unless you're a trained seamstress, or are willing to pay for the alterations, think twice about buying it. Even the best vintage buyers and collectors will splurge on something special, but be aware that your $20 flapper dress may turn into a $60 investment. If you are thinking about buying something that requires alterations, keep in mind that a variety of issues are virtually impossible to alter (altering raglan sleeves and replacing pant zippers should be avoided at all costs).

2. Know your fibers!

Ever notice that your acrylic Forever 21 sweater gets covered in little balls of fuzz or that your 70's go-go dress doesn't breathe well when you're dancing? Get comfortable with fiber characteristics and their value. Many a cute dress has been passed up on the basis of its fiber content. You may have found a darling double-knit poly mini-dress for your cute neighbor's disco party, but it won't be so cute when you're sweating up a storm in your polyester prison. And there's a reason that cashmere cardigan at Barney's costs ten times what the one at the off-brand store does. Sure, part of it is brand recognition, but it's doubtful the other sweater will last even one tenth as long as its high-quality counterpart.

3. Finally, be aware of condition!

Condition should be the first thing that you look at in a garment, because it's the first thing people will look at when you're wearing it. Be aware that while some small holes may be fixable, holes in knit fabrics will only grow. Also, find out what the store's return policy is in case that "surface stain" doesn't come out. Many stores will give a deeper discount on items that may not be salvageable, which generally means that you won't be able to return them. Use good judgment if an item is slightly flawed, and take great care of your clothes to prevent future condition issues.
