The return of the chinos
Wearing jeans all the time is easy but for my own selection of trousers to stay interesting I have fallen for chinos.
They have made appearances on the catwalks and are filtering back steadily into fashion magazines and the streets. Chinos are made of durable cotton twill that is woven in several weights and can be finished with a smooth, mercerized or soft, brushed surface. Originally used for summer uniforms by the US Army they have been rejuvenated and revitalized at long last by Stefano Pilati at Yves Saint Laurent, Chloé and the more affordable 3.1 Phillip Lim, Acne Jeans and Top Shop. Neutral colored and lightweight, I love them because of their timeless appeal and cool elegant touch. I like mine wide, a little bit slouchy and with pockets. But they’re available with pleats or no pleats, narrow or wide, tailored or more slouchy, cropped or long. Gone are the days of the classic preppy chinos!
I recently bought a pair of Stella McCartney chinos which I will photograph and post tomorrow. Acne has created their own amazing version and TopShop of course also has a model available.
